Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission

On February 10, 2023, the Report of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for the Province of Ontario was released.  The report stated the following related to the Township of Greater Madawaska:

“ALGONQUIN—RENFREW—PEMBROKE (formerly Renfrew—Nipissing—Pembroke) has been returned to its former boundaries. In the proposal, the Commission had removed the Township of Greater Madawaska, separating it from the rest of Renfrew County. We heard compelling submissions that this division compromised effective representation and would disrupt coherent communication with elected representatives and service delivery across Renfrew County. Greater Madawaska has thus been returned to ALGONQUIN—RENFREW—PEMBROKE and the southeastern boundary for this district has been moved back to the existing boundary on the Arnprior-Ottawa municipal border.”

Mayor Weir provided the following comment:

“We are ecstatic to hear that Greater Madawaska will remain in the electoral boundary of ALGONQUIN—RENFREW—PEMBROKE (formerly Renfrew—Nipissing—Pembroke).  I would like to extend my sincere appreciation for the efforts of the past Council especially Mayor Brian Hunt who recognized the significance of Greater Madawaska remaining in the electoral boundary of ALGONQUIN—RENFREW—PEMBROKE.  Furthermore, I would like to extend appreciation for the support given by Cheryl Gallant MP, Scott Reid MP, County of Renfrew, municipalities within the County of Renfrew, the media and the concerned citizens who took the time to sign a petition and voice their concerns.”

Staff will be presenting a more comprehensive memorandum at the Council meeting on Thursday, February 16, 2023.
